RAFFLESIA ARNOLDI

The vast archipelago and the great number of islands has made Indonesia the home of large variety of plant life. The Indonesian flora rangers from the Timmy orchid to the giant Rafflesia plant, no wonder many botanists are curious the study these plant.

The Raflesia Arnoldi is the biggest flower in the world. It is unusual because of its large size. It has a flower almost a meter in diameter and 1.40 meters in height.
“Rafflesia” is derived from the name of British Governor, Sir Thomas Stamford Rafles, who once governed and built the botanical gardens in Bogor, though it is called rafflesia, after raffles, the man who discovered the plant was Peccary, an Italian botanist who visited Sumatera in 1928.

Rafflesia consists of two parts, the stick-like part which grows in the middle and the petals around and below it.
The Rafflesia plant begins the flower in the tenth year. It blooms three or four times a year. Before it begins to flower, the leaves and the stem become dry and look dead, but the main root in the ground is still alive.

Indonesia has some of the richest forest in the world. The total area or forested land is approximately 120 million hectares.

These forests have existed for million of year and they have much to offer us. They are important for their products, such as timber, rattan, resin, etc. They are also important for keeping the soil fertile. The leaves of the forest trees fall to the ground and become humus. The humus is fertilizer for soil. The forests are also important for preventing soil erosion and floods. The roots of the trees prevent the soil from being washed was by the rain.

Some years ago forests in Indonesia looked from the air like an unbroken carpet of green. Today there are a lot of bare patches where trees have been cut down and cleared. The trees have been cut down for timber. Forests are cleared for farms, mines, and settlements. In some areas the destruction is continuing at a very rapid rate. If we do not stop this, our forests will be gone by the end of the century.

Our government realizes this and has taken some steps to prevent the destruction. Some regulations have been issued to protect the forests. In addition, development projects. It is our duty as good civtizens to help the government carry these programs successfully.
